Colt Smoke Wagon Review

Hold onto your hats, because this week, we’re diving into something special: the limited edition Colt Single Action Army (SAA) Smoke Wagon by Umarex. This beauty is a collector’s dream, blending historical charm with a touch of modern flair.
A Brief History Lesson
What exactly is a “Smoke Wagon”? Fans of the film Tombstone will recognise the phrase from a famous scene with Kurt Russell. In the 19th century, “smoke” referred to the black powder used in firearms, while “wagon” was slang for a pistol. So, the “Smoke Wagon” is a revolver, and Umarex’s version is a stunner.
The Details
This limited edition Colt SAA is individually numbered out of just 1200 units, making it a prized possession for any collector. Here are some of the standout features:
- Length: 275 mm (10.34 inches)
- Weight: 867 grams (1.42 lbs)
- Material: Mostly metal with a pearl handle effect
- Design: Ace of Spades inlay on both sides, gold hammer, gold cylinder, and gold trigger
- Ammunition: Capable of firing both BBs and pellets using the same shells
- Sights: Front post sight with a groove on top for the rear sight
Performance
While this revolver is more about style and historical appeal, it doesn’t disappoint in performance. Using 5.3 grain BBs, it clocks in at 378 feet per second, translating to 2.28 joules of energy. When using 7.87 grain pellets, it hits 341 feet per second (2.76 joules), and with 8.44 grain pellets, it reaches 308 feet per second (2.41 joules).
Handling & Usage
The Colt SAA Smoke Wagon is perfect for backyard plinking and tin can busting. It features a single-action mechanism and a single-stage trigger, true to the original design, but with a modern safety feature on the underside. Loading is straightforward: drop your ammo into the back of the shell, insert it into the cylinder, and you’re ready to go. The CO2 canister fits neatly into the grip, tightened with a built-in hex key—no more losing tools!
In the Field
Taking this revolver out for a test, it’s clear that it’s designed for fun. The smoke wagon’s accuracy is solid for casual shooting, and the overall experience is enhanced by its striking appearance. It’s not just a gun; it’s a piece of art that looks fantastic on display.
Final Thoughts
£229.95 at Bristol Airguns (£260 elsewhere), this limited edition Colt SAA Smoke Wagon is a worthwhile investment for any airgun collector or enthusiast. Its combination of historical significance, detailed craftsmanship, and modern bling makes it a standout piece. Whether you’re looking to add to your collection or just enjoy a bit of stylish plinking, this revolver won’t disappoint.

About Bristol Airguns

A Pastime
Bristol Airguns officially started in 2015, but the story goes back much further. David, the owner, grew up shooting his dad’s old BSA airgun in the 1970s, and also spent time deer-stalking and shooting .22 rimfire for target work.
Why The Shop Started
While running a pawnbroking business, David noticed something interesting. A lot of airguns were passing through, and there was real enthusiasm behind them. People were genuinely passionate. That’s when he realised the opportunity to step away from pawnbroking and into something far more rewarding.
What Makes Us Different
We don’t just sell airguns. We care about the person buying them. For us, selling an airgun isn’t the finish line, it’s the first step in someone’s journey as a shooter.
Instead of pushing the first gun on the shelf, we take time to understand what you want and why you want it. We know how important that feeling is when you walk out with a new bit of kit, ready to shoot.
Flexible Buying Options
We also know wallet pressure is real. That’s why we offer finance options, including 3, 6, 12, and 24 month plans.
To make the 12 and 24 month options possible, David personally became FCA registered, something not many RFDs do.
We’ve also added a deposit system, so you can secure your airgun now and pay the balance later, whether that’s in full or through finance.
Who We See Everyday
Our customers are a real mix, from complete beginners to long-time airgunners with a specific idea of what they want. And we love that variety.
Compared to the days of pawnbroking, the airgun community is a breath of fresh air. Airgunners are generally welcoming, friendly, and a pleasure to deal with. It makes our job genuinely enjoyable.
How We Help You Choose
When someone asks for advice, we start with them, not the product list.
We talk about:
- Your budget
- Your experience
- What you want the gun for
- How it feels when you pick it up
One of the most common mistakes we see is people buying something just because it’s popular. If you’ve handled a gun and you love it, great. But don’t buy what everyone else has just because social media says so.
Community Matters
We wouldn’t be here without shooters talking to each other and sharing knowledge. That’s why we:
- Run bi-annual open days at our range
- Chat with people online
- Engage with forums and social channels
It’s all part of helping more people enjoy the sport.
What We Enjoy Most
Above everything else, what keeps us going are the people we meet. Shooters come from all walks of life, but they’re almost always welcoming and passionate, and that’s one of the best things about this hobby.
